Critical Appraisal of the Medical Literature

1. Where was the information published?
2. What journal was the article published in?
3. What year was it published?
4. Who are the authors?
5. How well known are the authors?
6. Which journals appear in the reference list? How reputable are these journals?
7. Is the research objective well articulated and is the research question one that
you care to know the answer to?
8. Is the study setting and population similar enough to your own so that the results
can be applied to your own practice?
9. Would the results, if valid, prompt a change in your clinical behavior?
10.Is the study design sufficiently strong and appropriate for the objective?
11.Were all possible subjects accounted for?
12.Were the groups similar at the start of the study?
13.Were the instruments used in the study valid and reliable?
14.Were there confounding variables in the study?
15.Are the results statistically significant?
16.Was this article worth reading?
